Meet Andrea!

Andrea has an M.Ed. from Viterbo University in Education and from the University of Northern Iowa in Educational Leadership. She has been a middle school educator for the past 22 years in rural, urban, private, public, and magnet school environments. Andrea is entering a new passion this year as a high school behavior focus teacher.

Andrea has a great deal of experience with standards-based grading and implementing change based on data in both academic and behavior systems. As an educator at one of the first schools in Iowa to champion grading reform in Standards-Based Grading through PLCs, Andrea understands the process of working with educational stakeholders to create meaningful change.

As a language arts teacher at the middle school level, she has worked with Lucy Calkins UOS: Reading and Writing, Fountas @ Pinnell LLI, Kelly Gallagher and Penny Kittle, and Understanding by Design. Andrea is very passionate about embedding service learning, 21st-century skills, and the CASEL framework into the existing core curriculum. She won the Iowa City Chamber of Commerce Award for Student/Team Excellence for her service learning group.

At home, Andrea has twins and a pitbull boxer mix. Her son, who is twice exceptional on the autism spectrum, has been a great deal of inspiration and helped her learn how to advocate for and educate ALL children. Andrea is an avid traveler and loves learning about new cultures. She was selected as a US educator for study workshops in both South Korea and Germany. She has delivered teacher workshops in Korean and German studies, Standards-Based Grading, Structured Teaching for Students on the Autism Spectrum, and guided district teachers toward a Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum.
